Les singes souffrent d’une gale persistante. L’hyène, apprenant leur malheur, conçoit un stratagème pour les piéger. Elle leur propose un faux remède : une grande marmite remplie d’eau qu’il faudrait chauffer pour éliminer la maladie. Les singes, confiants, apportent du bois et se laissent enfermer dans la marmite. Tandis que le calao bat le tam-tam, l’hyène chauffe l’eau jusqu’à ce qu’ils soient ébouillantés. Le conte illustre la ruse destructrice de l’hyène et dénonce la naïveté collective face à la tromperie.
