Les animaux de la brousse fondent un village en harmonie. Mais l’insouciance de deux lézards provoque un incendie qui détruit tout. Les tentatives de secours entraînent d’autres pertes : la tortue meurt d’épuisement, le coq est sacrifié, le mouton aussi. Finalement, la tortue restante meurt de soif après l’assèchement du ruisseau. Le récit illustre l’enchaînement tragique des événements et justifie le proverbe : « Un malheur ne vient jamais seul ».
